THE new head of the Inland Revenue Board (IRB), Mohd Shukor Mahfar, is confident that the agency would be able to surpass the RM100 billion tax collection mark in the near future.
"One day, I am confident that the IRB would be able to surpass the three-digit figure in tax collection. It's just a matter of time," he told reporters after a handover of duty ceremony in KL yesterday.
Today marks Mohd Shukor's first official day as head of the IRB, replacing Tan Sri Hasmah Abdullah as the new chief executive.
In order to cross over the RM100-billion revenue, he said there would have to be a systematic effort by IRB and more importantly, the full cooperation among taxpayers to pay their dues.
IRB hopes that total tax collection for 2011 will surpass the RM90.7 billion, the highest recorded in 2008, in tandem with the economic expansion.
For the year 2011, the government has set a RM90 billion target for IRB.
Meanwhile, Hasmah said that the tax collection for 2010 has dropped slightly by 2 per cent but the national tax agency has managed to surpass its initial target by 4 per cent. "The target set for 2010 was a net collection of RM76 billion."
On her post retirement plans, Hasmah said, she will make a decision after taking a "well-deserved rest" after 37 years in service.
Mohd Shukor joined the IRB in 1979 and has extensive experience in the field of taxation through its services in various levels and branches of the state of the IRB.
He was the deputy director for compliance at IRB headquarters before being appointed as chief executive officer.
